Week 2 started our coding week where we were tasked to use various programs to make small and simple games using different parts of code. This was fun as we could use our own creations and enjoy them. We next got into 3D printing with the 3dToodler which was a pen that uses heat to melt single filaments o plastic. We were able to create simple semi-stable structures such as small Eiffel towers and buildings. We then started to look for objects to 3D print on the bigger MakerBot 3D Printer. We simply have to find designs and templates on thingiverse, a creation website for 3d printed objects, download them to the computer and input them into the printer. This was interesting to use up close as it is an emerging technology.
We then explored a new gadget in the help Desk: a banana piano. The banana piano was a piano that played sounds as you tapped specific bananas. We broke this down to the science and learned a lot regarding the transportation of signals and information.

Our First week of the help desk included introductions, class expectations and introductory drone lessons. Here, we learned how to operate drones safely through videos, modules and teachings. We were then able to take our knowledge outside to the field and put our flying to the test. We then used robots in and around the classroom that was a great opportunity for us to use our operating skills in another way. Some of these drones only needed a motion for them to take off and each had its different ways of operating which was enjoyable to watch.
During this first week we also looked at code on processing.org, a coding site for templates, games, lessons and videos about learning code and the coding world. This was fun as we got to see how simple code influenced the smallest games. We concluded talking about coding by using the DropMix card set that allows you to use coded cards to make beats and mix sounds using snippets from instruments, songs and electronically generated music. Some people also came in to set up there iPads and chrome books so we also talked about different operating systems and it’s components. This also brought up conversation on the new iOS that recently released. |
